Elanco Animal Health

R&D Building

Elanco is undergoing a metamorphosis as it plans a new 40-acre brownfield headquarters in a post-Covid work environment.

This office of the future maximizes efficiency by providing employees more in-person work options, resulting in reduced workstations and instead having a “playground” of better suited spaces and settings. The resulting buildings will reduce barriers to innovation and increase productivity.

Initially about 235,000 sf will be finished, with an addition 36,000 sf unfished. The R&D area covers approximately 50,000-sf of labs with 37,000-sf of support space.

The forward-thinking lab environment is flexible to allow for rapid changes in research and to facilitate collaboration. The labs support activities in office and non-lab areas, brainstorming areas, research space, shared research functions, research support, pilot plant for pre-commercial production and incubator space.

A module approach allows for adaptability and minimizes wasted floor or wall space. The labs all include windows for exterior views and natural light.

The new campus was guided in part by key design pillars to include wellness and sustainability throughout. Wellness aspects incorporate pets in the office space; access to nature and daylight in the office and labs; support of neurodiversity; encouraging movement and mindfulness; and access to healthy food. Sustainability aspects incorporate a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030, minimizing the use of water and following environmentally sound approaches to recycling lab-generated waste.

The campus includes a welcome center, a 300-person conference center, food service and a health area outfitted with a fitness center, wellness space and clinic.
