Science Park and Research Campus (SPARC) Kips Bay Master Plan

The master plan envisions the transformation of Hunter College’s Brookdale Campus into a two million square foot public health and education hub to grow the life sciences industry in Kips Bay.

The public health portion will include the 180,000-sf New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H) Clinical Care space and the 112,300-sf Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) Forensic Pathology Center. NYC H+H will include ambulatory care, primary care, wellness care and training facilities. The OCME will replace an aging nearby facility and include medical examiner and forensic toxicology laboratories.

Additional spaces include a 600,000-sf education portion that will house Hunter’s School of Nursing and School of Health Professions; CUNY Hunter research labs; CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Public Policy; Borough of Manhattan Community College health programs; and a new high school. The remaining 650,000-1,000,000-sf will provide laboratory and research space for commercial life sciences development.

The master plan creates a comprehensive site development; analyzes existing building and infrastructure; forms a unified and distinctive identity for the block; allows for a vibrant public realm; and ensures a pedestrian-friendly campus.

The overarching goals are to generate meaningful synergies between disparate user groups and to create a talent pipeline for New Yorkers to enter the life sciences and health care sectors.
