Valleywise Health Medical Center
Clinical Lab Feasibility Study and Design
Valleywise Health Medical Center’s clinical lab is core to their new Roosevelt campus hospital. HERA worked with the hospital planners, administration and the clinical lab director and staff to help meet goals for personnel, technology and quality of testing results for the new facility. We understood their current facilities and system requirements as their metropolitan locations expanded. We provided a clinical lab physical program and strategy to enhance its Care Reimaged system-wide focus.
Over the course of four planning workshops, the team developed a program, flow diagrams and a test fit for the central lab, which includes a core lab, microbiology, molecular biology, anatomic pathology, blood bank and phlebotomy. Subsequently, HERA was retained for the next phase of the new hospital implementation, providing lab planning and design.
The approach for the new clinical lab is a departure from current lab operations, providing an outline for new distribution of samples, new equipment and reorganized departments.
Working with lab leadership, HERA developed flow and adjacency diagrams to create an ideal flow within the labs. A program was then developed, vetted and revised using data supplied by end users through questionnaires. Blocking diagrams and test fits further defined layout options and established the best relationships between clinical lab departments.
The hospital supports public health and academic learning and research through a collaborative relationship with Creighton University Medical School.
As part of the project, HERA also worked with hospital administration, providing clinical lab planning for multiple satellite offices, as well as a prototype clinical lab for ambulatory care satellites.
