The $1.27 billion Parkland Hospital project, a new 64-acre healthcare campus, replaces the existing 56-year-old Parkland Memorial Hospital. The healthcare campus includes an 862-bed hospital, outpatient center, parking, central utility plant and Logistics building totaling 2.5 million square feet. The hospital and attached women and infant’s specialty hospital incorporate evidenced-based design.
The functional and space program for the hospital clinical laboratory features a Rapid Response lab within the hospital and the main laboratory on the upper floors of the new Logistics Building. The labs includes both automation and stand-alone instrumentation for molecular diagnostics, chemistry, toxicology, hematology, blood gas and urinalysis; a bone marrow and special coagulation lab; a flow cytometry lab; an immunology lab; and a microbiology lab. Additionally, HERA provided move management assistance to assist in the go-live of the new facility.
In the fall of 2023, the design team was rehired to conduct an analysis of consolidating the Rapid Response (STAT) Lab with the main Logistics Lab for efficiency and throughput of processes and to make available space in the hospital. HERA led a robust vendor evaluation so Parkland could update the original automation.
The campus is located within the Dallas Southwestern Medical District and serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) School of Medicine.
