Bureau of Marine Resources Laboratory

The BMR Laboratory is currently located in rented space that no longer fulfills the needs of the Bureau to accommodate additional staff and increased demand for services. The FDA-certified lab, which operates 24/7, houses shellfish testing wet lab, water sampling lab, and marine law enforcement. Laboratory and support spaces include:

  • Biotoxins
  • Bacteriology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Vibrio
  • Prep Labs
  • Microscopy Analysis
  • Incubator
  • Cold Rooms

This study considers two options for relocating the laboratory: reuse of existing state-owned space and new construction. Conceptual planning accommodates program needs for 90 staff; 50 to 120 visitors attending regular meetings, hearings, training classes and webinars; consolidation of storage; multi-level security; efficient adjacencies; regulatory requirements and NYS codes.
