The Science Center addition will add 15 new teaching labs for biology, chemistry, physics, cadaver and environmental science, as well as support spaces.
The central theme of the project is incorporating transparency throughout the building, which is achieved through large windows and glass walls. The transparency allows natural light to penetrate the building and showcases the science happening within the classrooms and labs. The openness also creates a safer scientific and learning environment.
The labs are built on 11-foot modules, integrating long-term flexibility and adaptability into the fiber of the design. For immediate flexibility, technology such as AV screens and wheeled furniture allow the rooms to be reconfigured quickly based on pedagogical needs. In addition, two interdisciplinary teaching labs are designed to serve multiple programs and courses.
Abundant informal interaction space is incorporated throughout the building. A community space provides a flexible area for functions such as fundraisers or commencement.
