National Institutes of Health

HERA’s Indefinite Delivery Contract (IDC) with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports the creation of safe, healthy and attractive facilities at NIH’s Bethesda (MD), Poolesville (MD) and Raleigh (NC) campuses. The contract covers animal care facilities, laboratories, healthcare/clinical space, office/public space, healthcare and central plant facilities.

Design of NIH projects is governed by the Design Requirements Manual (DRM); applicable sections of the Facilities Development Manual (FDM); and requirements of the Divisions of the Fire Marshal (DFM), Physical Security Measures (DPSM), Technical Resources (DTR), Facilities Stewardship (DFS), Facilities Operations and Maintenance (DFOM), Facilities Planning (DFP), and Environmental Protection (DEP). Additionally, DRM standards require compliance with the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide).

Compliance with these standards and requirements is an integral part of our work with NIH. HERA provided services for nearly 80 projects including lab renovations, mass spectrometer labs, building assessments and office renovations.

• Building 14H Cage Wash Pit – Structural and HVAC repairs of 40-year-old AAALAC accredited animal research facility (400 sf)
• Building 35 Electron Microscopy Lab Renovation – Conversion of microscopy room to cryo electron microscope room (600 sf)
• Building 35 Corridor Alterations – Upgrade interior finishes and lighting for shared entrance corridor
• Building 35A Mass Spectrometer – Evaluation of chilled beam ventilation and HVAC design improvements for new mass spectrometer
• Building 50 Lab Renovation – Renovation of open space laboratory modules to accommodate new principal investigators
• Building 50 Lee Laser Lab – Renovation of open space laboratory modules for Class III laser laboratory work and design of phasing for construction in space while occupied by scientists
