Virginia Department of Forensic Science

Western Laboratory Expansion/Renovation

The three-story addition includes space for both the forensic services laboratories and the medical examiner on the upper floors while the ground floor is dedicated to education and training for both agencies. Renovation of the existing building allowed the first floor to be dedicated to the medical examiner and the second floor to forensic labs. The new building and existing building connects on the first floor. The exterior of the addition is terraced from the ground level up to the first floor and features outdoor seating on the upper level area adjacent to the lunch room and break area.

Forensic science laboratory space includes: controlled substances, firearms/toolmarks examination (including testing/firing range), trace evidence, biology/DNA, latent prints and impressions, toxicology, questioned documents, vehicle exam, evidence receiving and storage, autopsy, histology, BSL3 autopsy, and related support. Other spaces include shared and public spaces, security systems, quality assurance, and administration.
