The new facility features enhanced technologies to ensure the highest quality of medical examination and investigation services for Orange County well into the future. The facility is a considerable upgrade as it replaces mobile trailer units previously used by the medical examiner. Located on Orange County’s Emergency Management Services campus, CLD designed the forensic spaces and assisted with the construction of the new 18,000-sf state-of-the-art pathology and death investigation facility which was mostly funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
The new single-story facility houses a five-station autopsy suite; two special autopsy stations; and a tissue storage & preparation laboratory for outsourcing histology and toxicology services. The facility also includes a four-vehicle sallyport, an imaging suite with a LODOX digital x-ray and space for a future CT scanner, a public waiting room, private offices and cubicles and a conference room.
Creating a calm and dignified space for the community and families was a top priority for the County and design team. Thoughtful design elements and comfortable spaces cater to those visiting the facility and grieving families.
Over the past decade, Orange County has experienced a steady population growth. On average, the medical examiner’s office investigates 1,000 deaths and conducts 500 autopsies annually.
Because of limited mechanical space above the ceilings, the design team was not able to fit ductwork over the existing structural elements. Instead, parts of each floor were converted into mechanical space, with two labs flanking a shared mechanical space to limit duct and other utility runs.
