Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences

Forensic Genetics Laboratory

In a building once known as the most modern bakery in the U.S., Harris County’s new Forensic Genetics Laboratory is now being touted as one of the nation’s top forensic crime labs. This fast-tracked project was constructed “at warp speed,” as noted by Texas Medical Center President and CEO, Dr. Richard Wainerdi. The project resides in a space which served as a train bay for the original Nabisco Products Factory.

The 15,000-sf DNA laboratory build-out contains serology labs, extraction labs, bone room, pre- and post-amplification labs, evidence receiving/storage, and administrative space for the Institute’s scientists and managers.

This facility is designed and planned to meet current law enforcement forensic design criteria, including CODIS and compliance with ISO17025 criteria.
