The Illinois Department of Transportation’s new Materials Testing and Research Center has officially opened. This $63 million, state-of-the-art facility located in Springfield, IL advances highway construction materials research and helps ensure quality, value and durability for Illinois roads and bridges.

Built in partnership with the Illinois Capital Development Board, the 81,000-square-foot building features high-bay central laboratory core with shared circulation and is surrounded by administrative services. Lab spaces include aggregate, soils, concrete, traffic instrumentation, metals and miscellaneous products, nuclear, cement, hot mix asphalt and chemistry (instrument, bituminous, analytical). The facility also incorporates training and meeting spaces and storage for hazardous chemicals.

This new center replaces a 1934 facility, providing modern space and technology to better serve Illinois communities and travelers.
