An awarded project

The Auburn University Gavin Engineering Research Laboratory recently was awarded the Outstanding Project by Learning by Design and was named a finalist for the inaugural Lab Manager Lab Design Excellence Awards. While we agree this is a special project, it is still gratifying to know others recognize it as well.

The renovation of 60,223 gross square feet of laboratories and offices improves space utilization within the building. It also replaces all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The interdisciplinary center focuses on research, graduate education and collaborative outreach opportunities to advance economic growth in Alabama and the Southeast.

The facility houses additive manufacturing; the nuclear power generation simulations lab; pulp and paper; aerospace engineering, including wind tunnel and advanced flow dynamics. The building needed to accommodate two 10,000-pound 3D printers large enough to print engines. Also included in the building are the Center for Polymer and Advanced Composites.

As laboratory consultant to Stevens & Wilkinson, HERA provided existing building and site conditions analysis and assessment, programming, laboratory planning and design.
