Philadelphia Police Department
Forensic Science Center
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

While the City of Philadelphia wished to conduct a pilot project to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable design, their Police Department wished to upgrade and consolidate its forensic labs—providing an opportunity to develop a green building with a technology focus. The rigorous program housed in a previously vacant 1920’s public school building includes criminalistics and DNA laboratories for hair/fiber/blood analysis; chemistry laboratories for drug analysis; crime scene unit for 24/7 crime scene evidence gathering; and firearms unit, including a ballistics analysis shooting range. The project received American Institute of Architects’ Top Green Projects of 2006.
