Triton College
Health and Science Building
River Grove, Illinois

This complete gut-renovation of the former Technology Building will transform the building into a Health and Science Academic Center. The facility will house a variety of basic science courses (biology, chemistry, anatomy) as well as an immersion environment (simulation labs) which will replicate a hospital environment as closely as possible. The program includes: simulation labs; anatomy/physiology classrooms; computer classroom (sonography and nuclear medicine); general and advanced chemistry labs; human biology lab; anatomy/physiology dissection lab; cadaver dissection prep and staging; and offices, storage, and support.

Looking toward the future to provide students with a state-of-the-art learning environment, the building will house such educational programs as nursing, surgical technology, diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine and ophthalmology, as well as provide classrooms for some biology and chemistry courses. Other features of the building will include a relaxed seating area for students and a computer commons area with WiFi capability.

Renovated with sustainability in mind, the project is LEED Silver certified. The building incorporates many sustainable concepts such as an efficient, low-energy consumption mechanical system; a cistern to collect roof water that is reused in washrooms; and a green roof with granite chips that reflect the sun back into the atmosphere, thus decreasing the wear and tear on the building. Many of the green features help cut down on the cost of operating and maintaining the building.
