City Colleges of Chicago
Malcom X College and School of Health Sciences
Chicago, Illinois

The new Malcolm X College Campus, located in the city’s Medical District, includes academic buildings comprising classrooms, skills labs and simulation labs. These spaces are designed with advanced technology and equipment within a virtual hospital that mimic the look of real-world healthcare facilities.

The college to careers educational model links highly specialized, technical curriculums with the needs of local employers, essentially creating a direct bridge between students and jobs of the 21st century economy such as pharmacy technicians, dental and health assistants, emergency medical technicians, surgical and medical assistants and radiology technicians. The facility also provides a working dental clinic for the community.

HERA provided full design and equipment planning services for the following laboratories in the core science wing: general and organic chemistry, general biology, microbiology, environmental lab, physics and anatomy and physiology (virtual, cadaver and dissection). Additionally, HERA provided medical and simulation equipment and AV\Data capture programming, planning and implementation for 67 simulation spaces housing 125 different simulation environments.

Equipment planning services included pedagogy validation, existing equipment survey and analysis, new equipment planning, budget administration, move management and procurement assistance.

The project, designed to achieve LEED NC certification, also offers ample space for general and adult education classrooms, athletics, a conference center, an auditorium, cafeteria, and landscaped open space with rainwater gardens and student courtyard. Extensive use of glass makes the building feel light and airy, rather than institutional. A parking structure is also part of the project.
